Soundtrack to April: between pathetic and empath

The month of April saw the first signs of spring pushing the clouds and wariness of winter away. A renewed sense of direction to life came with the turning of the seasons. It made me fall back in love with the journeys rather than destinations and observe movement with a refreshing sense of possibility. The music that I have listened to during this time highlights this, and if your life is needing an injection of hope and inspiration, I highly recommend the below listening.

Sara Bareilles is a jolly a singer-songwriter, basing her lyrics in humor and youthful emotion. Never Ever Getting Rid of Me and Getting over You in one playlist mood may seem contradictory, but the positive way in which both topics are played with lend themselves together. The over arching mood of this playlist being that if you are happy and joyful, but also fearful that this can all be taken away as quickly as it came about, you are allowed to simply focus on being carelessly and ridiculously happy with yourself.

Alex Lahey, Mandy Moore, Andy Grammer and Train all carry a similar message in their lyrics: that if you are content now, it is okay to focus on maintaining that contentment for a little bit, without worry about the next concern coming round the corner.

These bouncy tunes and forgiving humor when looking upon more difficult periods of life - that others would perhaps rather pretend did not ever occur - gives April an unabashed and empathetic theme of living to tell. Growth and accomplishment as much for your own entertainment as for other's pride. The crafter's of these tunes not only provide sympathy for your experience, but apathy too, and that makes them stand out amount the 'relate-able' content drive of other media outlets or artists.

With all this positive and hope floating in the air, there is always going to be days that slip through the net. For the days where the air you breathe seems that much thicker, there were artists like The Hunna with You Don't Want It With Me [Y.D.W.I.W.M] thudding in my ears. Tired Lion's moody, punk ballet of Cinderella Dracula got me through more than one rush hour commute, and Daya's bubblegum pop sensation of Sit Still, Look Pretty to summon the buckling up, knuckling down and hustle energy needed to step through those power-assist double doors of the day job.

In summary, April was all about looking after yourself, maintaining your contentment with life and building up your repertoire so that you have a greater ability to think about and look after others in the long run. Find the full list of artists/sounds below and hear it for yourself.

Best,

L x
